Bloody Ears UPDATE

Yesterday I was rabbit hunting and after a good long run one of my dogs came out of the woods with blood all over his head, chest and front legs. It gave me a scare but he was not acting like he was hurt. Took him back to the truck, cleaned him up and and found 2-3 cuts on the ends of each of his ears. I slowed the bleeding with some pressure and some kwik stop styptic gel. I got him home and had to continually apply this stuff and pressure to get the bleeding to stop completely. It now is scabbed over and he is fine. I think he cut them in some nasty thorn bushes, but now that this has happened I am concerned the cuts will reopen even in briers. Anyone else every have this happen and is there something you guys do to prevent it or protect his ears and prevent it from happening again. I am planning a hunting trip this weekend and would like to know he wont end up a bloody mess again.

UPDATE:
Bought the EMT gel and TSC and it realy works. Stops the bleeding quick and lasted the rest of the day running. Added some more on the way home and kept my dog, dog box, tailgate and hunting clothes from getting all bloody. Thanks to those for suggesting it. Now I dont have to CUT OFF HIS ears!

Thanks, do they ever heal up completely or do they bleed every time out. Mine will get a slightly bloody tail but It never dripped blood like this before.
I have heard of guys bobbing a tail to prevent blood loss, I wonder if a dog could loose enough blood from its ears to be a concern.

Cut them off just like everyone does with the tails You should see how it looks on a white dog

nothin you can do, these are war wounds lol his earswill eventually become tough as shoe leather. he will be fine they all will get cuts and abrasions from time to time. his ears will get cut bout every time out till they toughen up.

This dog is 8 years old and I have never seen this before. We have hunted this spot a few time but this run did cover some new ground. Good to know its nothing to worry about.

See this alot , like Reddog said U should see it on a white dog ; ) sometime it's cuts & I've also seen it just be a puncher to a small vein in the ear. Either way a couple days it will heal

I was hunting out in Jackson yesterday the snow was coming down I call it a day . I put a&d ointment on there ears heals up good .

He has gotten scratches before of course, but the cuts that were bleeding the most were slices at the end of his ears. Perhaps one of them hit a vein.

I had the same thing happen to a young hound of mine yesterday. He had a gash on the end of his ear, his chest and shoulders were covered in blood. I believe a thorn might have hit a small blood vessel. I wouldn't worry about it, he should be fine to run next weekend..

Last week one of our males sliced his ear.bought this stuff from tractor supply.dryed his ear and put it on and he stopped bleeding.hunted the rest of the day.
will look and see what the name is.It`s real sticky then dry hard.

this happens to my male dog all the time. it will stop bleeding on its own. his ears look terriable.

Here's my 9 month old Patch pup with his first cut ear. Twos days later he was running again no problems

Happens a Lot best thing we found that helps is to Slather their ears down real good with neosporin or bag balm Before sending them out Seems to help.And if they do get cut you already have some antiseptic on em slows the bleeding down anyways.
