I would think hit and miss running would drag the average down as much as lack of rabbits.

Consistancy in speed would keep the number up. JMO.

This is a typical day running....I consider my dogs medium speed

Image

If I run short trips of a couple hours the speed is way up but this is typical for a 15-20 mile day. Once they get around 25 miles the speed drops to 3.5-4mph average

I want to buy ur 7mph rabbit runners thats a hell of a average if ur in the woods for any amount of time. u will not get a average of 7
I journal every run off everyday. Keeping track of, weather, Garmin speed, etc. now I run on average 8 hours 6 days a week. I HAVE NEVER SEEN A 7 mph average for the time I spend in the woods. Averages always drop by the end of the day. even if running is great but the rabbits are not out your average will get killed.
Now I am not saying I run a fast dog but will be happy to drop my fastest with any other.

Turn off ur garmins when driving down the road as its bumping ur average.

Hell my best day since I got a garmin was 36.3 miles 4.49 mph this was with 15 dogs on hare in pines. flat ground. Infact it might have been my best day ever. Dog were leaving smoke trails behind u M they were running so hard.

Right down ur speeds for a week or 5 day. to get a accurate average

I've found the dog doing the most work may not necessarily be the fastest or the one covering the most distance. Cutting and swinging makes the numbers go up but doesn't always improve a race. Also if you pause tracking between rabbits or start new hunts every rabbit you will end up at better numbers.a fast day for us would be 4.5 to 5 for a 10 to 15 mile day. I track from the time I start till the time I stop. Many days are less due to lack of rabbits

My hounds are slow I guess, 2.5-3.0 on an all day hunt. I would really like to run with some of these, 4.0-5.5 mph hounds. Would like to see that.

Chapkos, I'm just curious, why do you think that dogs cannot average 5-6 mph on a rabbit/hare?

On hare yes in good tracking for a few hours.
I have ran cottontail all over and have some of the best cottontail running around these parts. Have ran with hundreds of beagles( fast beagles) snapps, birch lake, meachum, gerstenbugers, branko, greenbay, ext and when ur talking average speed I just have not seen 6 and 7 mile averages in a day of hunting. A hour of stwady running or two than yes but a full day there is just time the dogs spend not running hunting ext, brings down an average.

That daytona dog sight raced that yote pretty much the whole time as he just kept stoping and looking back at her. Than when she would get 100 ft away. He would blow otta there just playing with her. Her average was olny 14 she is line breed snapps. Some of the fastesr if not these fastest line of beagles out there. Jmo

Its depends briar thickest like yesterday 3.5 for 8 miles with hour of no running. In wide open fields at night with high scent 17 miles 6.1 so average speed 4.8

are you guys pausing tracking between rabbits or just letting it run all day- ?
what are your speeds running just one dog,?

after reading this thread -- ive reset my gps twice this weekend to try this --i had 300 miles at 2.7 when i started
-

saturday --- breaking thru crust quite a bit---running quite a bit in cedar thickets, pretty decent scenting----------- 2.9 mph and 23 miles - 2 dogs, just checked one collar 5 hare killed - restarted a hare quickly except once
--i guess dogs were hunting almost as fast as theyre running :(

next day -- , i think crust holding dog up a little more -started later and quit early , just one dog , 19miles at 3.2 - ran first hare over 3 hours almost never leaving a few acres of very thick,, head high cedars- all tracked up, pretty ugly the last hour of that run , finally hare committed suicide

-it was down to 2.7 after that run

i kept thinking , wow this hare is really killing my average ,hope somebody shoots him - :) the next one , ,totally different run , he was back up to 3.89 when that one was killed , running in big open cedar swamp -straight out, straight back,,hare shot at about 20 times before it was killed ,, i think that is some indication of speed dog was running and the team of sharpshooters i was hunting with - :) -- dog pretty much staying on top of crust , not much snow under big cedars-- very little thick stuff except blowdowns ,, - this dog can run fast at times- was hoping to set a new world speed record , :D

i wanted to reset it so bad . :) what im getting at is there is so many variables- same dog ,same day,

the second run all took place very near the first run -a whole different kind of race --

after that,,, getting tracked up , steadily slower and more checks , didnt move but should have to keep speed up , lol back to 3.2

i cant wait to try this out in training season ,,
no shooting-- no hunters turning the hare -no snow, no time used to start another hare , cool damp ground , just curious what speed will be , :)
i was very happy with garmin never looking at this data --- you guys have ruined me now :D

That's all I needed to know Chapkos. Just out of curiosity, did you look at how fast the top speed was for the site chase?

Snowshoehareguide: When i solo my female, her speed is 2/3 of what it is from when she's running in the pack.

I realize none of these numbers mean a darn thing if you can't circle the rabbit...it's still fun to look.
