CAN ANYONE GIVE ME ANY INFO ON WHAT KIND OF DOG WOULD DO WELL IN PROGRESSIVE PACK FORMAT. THANKS

I have only been to one Progressive Pack trial and have heard of the problems in the past, I have run a thousand times with a Progressive Pack Hall of Fame dog. I am not going to give names of owner or dog because its not important. The dog is a super nice dog. He runs a upper medium speed I would say. He is a great check dog, and can hold the line between his feet while running. By no means is this dog a brace dog.

On the other hand I own a male that I have ran with this dog over a thousand times... That has two wins in Midwest SPO and we all know that is not brace! The only Progressive Pack trial he was ever in he placed. I would say Progressive Pack looks for dogs that can do it right now matter what there speed is. They like a good check dog, that can run the line without slashing, cutting or cheating.

I did like to get in the middle of controverys and budding judging that I have heard has gone on in progressive pack, I can say the Thumb Club in Michigan treated me very well and nobody there new me from Adam the day my hound placed. I will go back.

I went to my 1st p.p. hunt last year at ashland Ohio. Did not know any one at the club . Was treated well by every one. Won 3rd place in the hunt with A little 11 inch female that ran A tight line and would explode out of the check area. This year I went back to the Ohio state hunt held at Ashland. won 2nd place with the 1 year old son of female from year before. I have hunted Ukc coonhound and beagle trials over 50 years heard all the bad remarks made about ukc that you now or hearing about P.P. I ran the same little 11 inch female at killbuck sportsman club Holmesville Ohio in A ukc hunt allso last year. won 1st. place. the reason for all this. I feel that if you have A better then average dog you will do your share of winning in all formats. If you or trying to push A average or less dog through A trial for A win and don`t succeed you will go home complaining about buddy judgeing ETC. just my thoughts on this subject .

Thank you every one for the info. I was just trying to get a little info on this subject. I just wondered what style dog the rules were geared for or how it was set up. I don't needto know what complaints you might have with clubs or judges. Every format is going to have its critics and every one will sooner or later run in to someone dishonest. So please if you just want to say something bad about the orginization as a whole keep quite. I really was just looking for info. Don't want to get caught up in one of those big arguments on here.

PP for the most part is looking for a upper med speed dog that runs a clean line and works within the pack well. no cutting or swinging is allowed. fast dogs are fine but they better be super clean if they pull away from the pack. whereas LP likes a faster dog that might cut or swing a bit. more emphasis on individual accomplishment in LP. at least thats how it seems to me. im not much of a trialer but i figured id try to answer your question and stay on topic. im sure someone else can answer better.

All good information.

PP dogs are dogs that run clean and return to the point of loss.

Speed really isn't a factor.

My PP dogs are not as fast as some of the dogs I have had in the past.

But they arent slow either.

You don't kill many rabbits with brace dogs.

And I'm a rabbit hunter.

In fact one of the fastest dogs I have seen run a rabbit is a PP hall of Fame Grand champ. That is also a UKC field champ.
Also this same dog made it back to the winners pack in a Mid west trial a couple year sago at the age of 7.

I just started running PP hunts about a year ago but i am now a licsenced judge and master of hounds prior to that i ran UKC and still do.Baisically you want a medium to medium fast hound that only barks on the track and works a check from the insideout you also don't want a dog that cuts or gets overlly agressive on a track, that is what it takes just to stay on the ground. The better a check dog and the harder it hunts the better you will place. You may also want to check out the ARHA home page as you will find some good info there like the actuall rules and upcoming events. If you are interested we have hunt next weekend in coshocton OH.
