Re: What would you pick to feed
We all could just buy the cheapest dog food.
Because it's all the same or close enough that it doesn't matter.
The more I read it's really hard to believe the money
i've wasted on what I thought was a quality dog food.
LOL!
I'm going to keep feeding what I think is quality feed.
VICTOR!!!

Re: What would you pick to feed
It matters not to me what anyone else feeds. I grew up feeding cats, dogs, hogs, cows, goats and mules what we grew on the farm. We grew meat animals, corn, wheat, oats, soy beans and garden produce. My dogs got the scrapes and looked good and hunted hard and long. Am I just an old an old worn out bird hunter, rabbit hunter, squirrel hunter, and coon hunter or am I pretty wise?
Re: What would you pick to feed
I feed my dogs same thing I eat...chicken, beef, pork, fish, venison, rabbit, squirrel, rice, apples, and they seem to do fine. No recalls, no question about all the unknowns.
Not sure why dog food topics get heated. Everyone has a different standard of what a quality food is. Some of the worst feeds I've ever tried others will claim to be the best. The biggest difference I seen when feeding kibble was the amount you had to feed and the stomach bloat.
If you only run couple times a month and are not conditioning for trials some of the cheaper foods make sense. If your spending $200-$400 a weekend traveling to field trials it seems to me spending a little extra for a premium food only makes sense if it gives you even the slightest advantage.

Re: What would you pick to feed
I'd say you are pretty wise as you certainly have experienced the effects of feeding what you had available and not some trumped up, hype from a manufacturer. I suppose you and your family even ate the results of feeding CORN, WHEAT, SOYBEANS and GARDEN produce to your meat animals and it appears your other animals thrived on those things as well. I've inspected THOUSANDS of human meat animals such as beef, hogs, lambs and goats only to shake my head at what I see between those fed the highest so-called quality store bought feeds and those raised your old way. If I were to eat a steak in a restaurant I would prefer the taste, juiciness and the tenderness of the GRAIN FED "Prime" beef steak BUT if I were to buy a side of beef for my personal freezer the extra cost between that prime and choice beef would NOT be such a bang for my buck. The prime beef would have a lot more fat or marbling which is what gives it all those things above that I like BUT with that comes a much higher price and the lessor priced Choice grade beef will still be tasty, juicy and tender but maybe not to the point of cutting it with a fork in lieu of a butter knife. The other issue would be the loss due to having to trim a lot of that fat from the carcass because of just so much of it and the fact that ground beef made from it can only contain 30% fat, maximum so the rest of that weight one paid for goes into some other product that can have excessive fat added such as hot dogs, luncheon meats, sausage, hamburger, hamburger patties or hamburger patty mix. Back to the bang for ones buck.lowell robertson wrote:It matters not to me what anyone else feeds. I grew up feeding cats, dogs, hogs, cows, goats and mules what we grew on the farm. Re: What would you pick to feed
What did everyone feed 30 years ago before the no corn/ soy fad ? I have news for some folks dogs are omnivores not carnivores they can survive on plant protein and meat protein. I also saw on here where someone stated that high protein diets can result in kidney disease when dogs isn't ran much. Here is facts on that as well. When Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN) level reaches 75 then its bad news which takes a ton of protein. I find it funny greyhounds are rested 22 hours a day and are fed raw meat mixed with 30%+ high protein kibble. Before I get too much backlash I hold two certifications in nutrition. With that I have been in the greyhound industry, I have swam dogs, field trialed beagles, bird dogs and coonhounds. I have before and after pictures of beagles on my facebook page showing the results of what I do compared to what other people "in the know" have done with the same dog. I'm not bragging but I hate to see these dog food posts without one person posting one fact on biochemistry let alone know what biochemistry is. If your feed works then so be it but I guarantee you that 90% on here that has been around 10+ years have said the same thing about their previous food as they do now with their new feed. I tracked one guy for 3 years on a forum posting how his food was the best. He changed feed 7 times in 3 years and every time that new food was the best ever. He had 0 scientific knowledge as to why it was the best. As posted many times over big feed mills manufacture multiple brands with same ingredients same volume different bags bla bla bla. That bag of Joy you feed nmay be the same Hi standard that your neighbor feeds but he claims his is better. Is my $100.00 bill worth more than your $100.00 bill ?

Purnia Pro Plan Sport. I got my 7 month old female out of the running pen today. She had been in there for 48 hours and was still running. Enough said.

Re: What would you pick to feed
Back in the day people fed what they could, I knew a man that fed horses to his dogs. But most of the time they just had vegetables and corn meal, They would fry up some corn pone and throw to the dogs when they would howl from hunger, thats how hush puppies got their name.

Some $100 dollar bills are counterfeit, .... fake, ..... like some of the people on here. I will take my chances with my $100 dollar bill cuz i know mine is real. What's the worst that can happen, Mine is worth the same as someone else's who's is also real ??? I dont lose in that situation, its a tie

Re: What would you pick to feed
I have been feeding our house dog (Springer Spaniel) who is 48-50 lbs 2 cups a day of EVO red meat formula and she has gained weight. This is a very high energy dog that run in the snow for hours every day and paces the house constantly. Going to cut back to 1.5 cups. If she does well that's 1/2 what most guys feed a 20 lb beagle. Must be potent stuff. If I lost my chicken supplier I would try this on beagles.

Re: What would you pick to feed
Dave, I have a store who sells EVO. Now they are forty five minutes away from me but after I get married and move into out new house I will be only 15 minutes from this store. I plan on only having four or five dogs at a time. Do you know the biggest bag they carry??
Thanks
Thanks

Re: What would you pick to feed
GREAT post R&D and although I don't know you in the least, I can tell ALOT from what one posts. I moved this discussion from the one I stepped on about specific brand and I apologize to Casey for doing so. My intent was to merely point out that consumers get fleeced by manufacturers everyday as most of the big businesses are actually monopolized by a very small handful of actual producers. This goes for the human meat and poultry industry as well as the pet food industry. I also have a degree in animal science and worked 30 years directly on the floors of NUMEROUS meat and poultry producers across the U.S. actually doing hands on inspection. Sorry to say I actually never flipped a pizza or a ground beef burger in my life but I have eaten many of them. What I know about them is that they are also all basically the same as the ingredients in a pizza as far as nutrition are basically the same as is a ground beef burger the same at Mickey D's as it is at any of the others. The only differences among them is the perfume manufacturers put on the pig so as to trick consumers into thinking they are different or better. YES, you may taste differences and that is all a matter of personal preference BUT FACTS and science is that Ground beef is basically Ground Beef, sausage is sausage, crust is crust and a hamburger bun is a hamburger bun. Notice I didn't say I've eaten numerous HAMBURGERS from these places as a ground beef burger and a hamburger or a hamburger patty are two entirely different things when it comes to quality and nutrition. That cheap ole Hamburger can be manufactured to meet and exceed the protein level with less fat than that high dollar Black Angus ground beef Burger with the use of grain. Facts are a burger made from strictly vegetables and GRAIN can be manufactured to be just as good. Fed about every dry dog food over my years to beagles, bird dogs, coon hounds and trialed coonhounds pretty heavy at one stage of my life and was competitive regardless of what my hounds were being feed. NOW, I'm not saying they would have been able to compete in the Iditarod dog sled competition BUT I've yet to see any trial or hunting experience compare with that. There was also a time many years ago that I made my own dog feed and I went to the co-op and bought meat and bone meal, ground corn and added other ingredients to make a meal blend that I mixed with water when I fed. I can tell you I was trialing coon hounds at the time and my hounds never petered out but they did beat but not because they weren't able to physically compete but they were in cast with better hounds!R and D kennels wrote:What did everyone feed 30 years ago before the no corn/ soy fad ? Re: What would you pick to feed
I ask what food is best ?

Dog before I got him fed Diamond I believe at this time. Do I need to tell anyone this is summer? look at the coat, rough ? wheres the muscles ? this dog was ran 5 days a week.
Same dog 6 months later look at the slick coat , wait ! this is late winter slick !n fed my chosen feed and vitamin mix look at the muscle tone even the neck is muscled.

Same dog middle of this January 2 weeks after back surgery never left his crate for 2 weeks . slick coat ? well muscled ? fed my chosen food and vitamin mix
Look at the muscle and slick coat anyone who knows anything about coon dog field trials would give me the thumbs up on this condition. Fed Joy dog food

1987 Iams dog food again my vitamin mix slick ? muscle ?

Pro Plan but as you can see the feed choices didn't really change composition it was my supplement formation. I will say my 9-37 Gait "R" Aide is compromised of 37 vitamins, herbs and minerals. I have thousands of hours of R & D invested in this formula at which I wont divulge. Sorry but family don't even know all of the ingredients. I started working with it at age 15 . The bird dog was one of many I was paid to condition starting at 17 years old. I literally used to get in trouble at school because they sent you to the library study hall as punishment. I took the time to read all the nutrition and biochemistry books I could read. I quit school to handle/ condition dogs, however I got my GED and went to college later.
