moving away from deer

If you jump deer while hunting do you move your dogs away from the area or do you go thru it any way? We jumped 7 or 8 today on a hillside we were starting to hunt. My young dog took off to sight run them but stopped as soon as I got my whistle in my mouth she never opened up and never got more than 50 yards from me. We changed our plans and hunted another area and then came back to this hillside about 20 minutes later. We hunted right across there fresh tracks without any problems but I still cringe every time I put dogs in areas of temptation. I havent had to spend hours chasing down deer runners(knock on wood) for many a year but the scares must still be there.

I'll hunt mine right through it if I ONLY have my older broke dogs never with the young ones. That is unless I'm trying to set them up for ..... you know a little electro shock therapy Ha!

Yea wish I had collars I planned to buy some after the first of the year but Christmas really broke me this year! My wife wanted a divorce and I hadnt planned on spending that much for Christmas this year

You did exactly the right thing! By changeing directions away from the deer you actaully told the hounds you didn't want them to run the deer. They read your body language and tone of voice through the whole affair and know they pleased you. IN the future, if you didn't at the time, praise them for leaving the deer when you change directions and then praise them again when they get a rabbit going each time they run it past you; allow them to run the rabbit for a while longer then ussual before you shoot it as a form of treat. Be sure to show them exactly how proud of them you are.

No need to coax a hound into running a deer so you can shock them off it when you have one that turns them down. That will confuse them and cause them to mistrust you. When you walk a hound over the deer tracks expecting them to run it so you can shock them you are sending them signals that they can read even if unintentionally that says run the deer.
