I finally went to this site and think you guys are overreacting.I don't know Cris but it looks to me like he is trying to come up with a better way of selling pup.If you read HIS definition of a backyard breeder and find yourself there then you should look in the mirror.I call myself a backyard breeder and will continue to do so.To each his own, don't bash a guy for his choice of words(what would you call a bad breeder?) or for trying to make money.I hope a lot of pups are sold this way and he makes enough money to have to figure out a tax loophole.GOD BLESS AMERICA!
As you said to each his own............and if someone chooses to call that site a glorified puppy mill wouldnt you agree that would be their choice to make(if thats what they call a bad breeder?).........just like Chris made the choice to call anyone who sells a pup for less than $250 a puppy mill or irresponsible breeder.Buckeye Bob wrote:To each his own, don't bash a guy for his choice of words(what would you call a bad breeder?) or for trying to make money.
I dont think it has nothing to do with making money or selling dogs.......its got to do with Chris saying you're either in his group........or you're a irresponsible puppy mill. If you want to make money selling dogs do it.......but admit your just another dog trader or on line pet store, dont try hiding it as your something better than everyone else.
I really liked the part where you have to chase trophy's or you dont know how to breed........ I know a few guys who have been in dogs for 50+ years that never trial and have some great dogs.......Chris maybe should let them know that they are not rersponsible breeders and dont know what they are doing

Did you all know a backyard breeder is a breeder that pups are sub-standard quality and are relatively cheap, usually $100-$250.
Did you know responsible breeders are knowledgeable about house breaking, training, socializing, breeding, health; constantly reads dog-related materials and probably active in online discussions about traits, abilities, etc. But a backyard breeder has own ideas which may not coincide with professionals' opinions; won't bother to read or participate in any further education. Seems kinda odd the normal joe blow will use wormers made for dogs from a vet.......but responsible breeders use Ivomec for pigs, now thats something, isnt it?
I would say the shoe just got tried out on the other foot.
This is my opinion of course and we all know about opinions......but the only part of the site that fires me up is his comparison page.......and thats because its BS, hogwash, a sales pitch! And most of you small breeders get to be the butt of the joke, unless of course you join the group. Which leads to another thing......how does Chris know who is responsible and who is not? Does he personally go and watch every litter be born and weaned that he sells on that site???? lol.
Best to you all,
Randy
On the other beagleboard that Chris brought this up on, there was a reader that suggested he would be willing to travel to prospective breeders houses and rate their facilities and determine if they were up to snuff to be on this list of responsible breeders...I for one don't want anyone coming to my house and trying to compare me to someone that has a 40x80 covered polebarn and concrete floors with drains to septic tanks and heated stalls...I hunt and trial a little and don't have the resources to have a place like that. If the definition of a puppymill is someone that breeds just to make a buck and breeds prolificly, they would need a place like that to do it. My backyard has a few hounds and I only breed when I need pups, so I don't need a "facility". You can defend Chris for trying to make a dollar, but he does it under the guise of helping the beagle breeders make a buck too...One of the good things about rabbit hunting is you can get into it relatively cheap compared to say bird hunting or even coon hunting where a good dog can cost 1500.00 or more...I don't think this will put a dent in puppymills, perhaps even creating more puppymills would be the result. Once someone sells a few beagles for 500.00 or more, after getting 200.00 previously, it seems they would MAYBE start breeding when they otherwise might not. A 250% increase seems like a good incentive, don't you think???? Tony
Randy,
I am glad this hit someone else up beside the face. I don't trial, chase ribbons or plaques although i have respect for others that commit to do so. I keep around 6 dogs always trying out young dogs trying to find the combination that works best for me usually selling the ones that do not fit my pack. Are the ones i sold bad? No they just did not suit what i was trying to do and the new owners seem very happy with them. When i do decide to raise a litter and there hasn't been one at my house in the last 2 years i will keep a couple for myself and sell the excess. Does this make me a back yard breeder? God i hope so! The way i see it the back yard breeder is usually a hunter and we spend countless hours running and fine tuning a small pack of beagles and it is beacuse of the small amount of dogs we deal that lets us learn all there is about individual hounds in our kennel. We learn all the good and bad points on each dog and what each can contribute to a satisfactory pack. I typically buy most my dogs from the small back yard breeder. Why? Because he is usually a hunter a guys that puts time on his dogs one that feeds them rabbit tracks what they were bred to do. The backyard breeder does not look at his dogs as brood bitches/baby machines his dogs are his friends and hunting companions. These are the same guys who will physically defend his dogs just like they are a part of his family.
I don't know Chris but i understand what he is trying to do. The problem here is the description of responsible -vs- backyard breeder does nothing but isolate and belittle the good guys in this sport.
Ole well on the bright side i guess this will mean i will get to buy those well bred pups from the backyard breeders at much reduced prices since they won't be in the click (lol)
