e collar audio tone
Correct me if I'm wrong, I believe the TriTronics Classic 70 XLS (2 dog)has the audio tone, where the Dogtra 1802 does not.
I like the idea of a tone as the first warning over going straight to the shock. Those of you that own the Classic 70 XLS, do you find yourself having to use tone only, or do you find your using both? Percentage of each?
Once you've corrected the hard headed dog, trash runner, etc. do you then throw the unit in a drawer, or does the dog wear the collar everytime out, even if (hopefully) you find that you are no longer seeing any bad habits?
I'm deciding that when I get a couple of dogs if this is a must tool to own.
Thank you

i got a 3 dog classic 70. all my dogs know what the tone means...GET HERE NOW
. my male dog still needs bumped on #1 every few times out as a reminder im the boss. none of my dogs run trash, but i really enjoy the model 70 for handling. i'll always have a set. im not familiar with DOGTRA, but you cant go wrong with TRI-TRONICS.

I've got a couple that will respond to the tone feature on my Classic 70's, but I also have one female that has to be reminded with a quick tap on setting #1 that when I yell "Let's Go!", that means for her to get to me...she dont want to quit hunting for another rabbit! I also have one male that needs a quick tap on #1 setting to remind him to come in when I yell too. But I do have a few that responds well to just the tone, so I like that feature of the Tri-Tronics e-collars.
Good luck!
Good luck!

I just recently got a 6-dog classic 70 and love it. I very rarely have to use the electricity on any of my hounds more than once. The tone is the only thing needed to call them in. My buddies are amazed when I run 6 hounds and don't need a leash. It gets even better when it's time to load up and they haven't heard me yell or whistle.
I never run dogs without a collar. My trust only goes so far

Dogtra
I have the Dogtra 2002 NCP unit and like it a lot. Instead of a tone like the Tritronic units, it uses a vibration, like on a beeper. Regardless, I use it the same way as you guys. ......and like you, I often have to use the Nick feature to bump'em back in. Tritronics is good, but I must say, I am extremely pleased with the Dogtra and would purchase another if given the chance.
Dogs don't have to look good to win tittles, but conformation "enhances their chances"!
I have the Sports 50, Tri tronics. I wear it on all my dogs, even though they have been around deer. What is the use of buying it if you leave at home or in the truck. I and many of these guys are from the old school,
hickory sticks and dog chains, running like a banshee chasing them down.
Then they came out with tracking collars and training collars and all we could say then was thank you, thank you. You can't go wrong with these 2 items.

I personally don't like the tones. I feel that my voice command should be the only tone they need to hear AND the only type of warning. I do not want the dog confused with thinking he can do his buisnes until he hears that beep. When I call, he needs to COME.
Now don't misunderstand me, I DO have to bump one every once in a while for getting stubborn, but when I call them out, they KNOW to come. If they choose to ignore me, then a light bump gets them back in. I do run collers on younger hounds and on an older one that gets a little hard of hearing from time to time, but have several that don't need the e-coller at all. (Now watch them go and make a liar out of me, lol)
We compete our hounds in trials every now and again. You can NOT use controlling devices on these dogs at the trials. If they aren't trained to your voice, you are in for a LONG day.
Good running to ya!

Don't squat with your spurs on!
Southern, you bring up a very good point about obedience. I have the tone function on my Innotek CS-200 (I think that is what it is called) and it worked well for the first beagle that I owned. She didn't know the meaning of quit, that dog would run a rabbit ALL DAY LONG. She was as stubborn as they come. I got her used to just hearing the tone and she would come to me with just the sound of the tone and occasionally a little bump.
Now, the next beagle that I owned got be very spoiled. I don't put the collar on her at all (except after she ran off game (I am convinced that it was a cat because she has turned down deer since that one incident). I don't use a lead either. She will hunt all day if I ask her to, but when I say it is time to go, she happily follows me back to the car.
My latest puppy has a lot to learn with the obedience thing, I had to run him down when I was out with Swing the last time and I ended up stepping on him cause he zig'd when he should have zag'd. He has been good since that incident too, but I will probably have to get the collar on him in the future. A bark collar is probably in the works too. There are too many 2:00 am wakeups lately for my liking. On the other hand, nobody will get into my back yard without me knowing it.
Well, enough of my rambling.

Well thanks for all the advice. It appears that an e collar is manditory equipment to have.
It comes down to either the Tri-Tronics Classic 70 XLS or the Dogtra 2002ncp. I like the idea of an audio signal just in case a dog drops a collar it'll be useful in finding it. Then again there seems to be alot of concern about battery life when cold out with the Tri-Tronics. The only answer I guess is to buy both! LOL

I have had the older systems from Tri-Tronics for years and the new models have much better batteries than the old. I had trouble in the cold until I got my new ones. It is not a problem anymore.

rico you have to be with in inches to hear the tone.i do not use the tone to call my dog every time. but use it to let them know that they need to pay atention to my comands. i use bells on them in the field and sometimes they make it harder for the dogs to hear me.

The tone on the classic 70 has also been improved. You can hear it from 10-20 yards away. If I have 6 dogs working a check they can all hear the tone on one collar,.... well I can't truely say they can ALL hear it, but they sure do come running
