CULL'S
Couldn't sleep started to think about CULLS so I went to the Computer
I notice that there're 1734 culls that are use on different Post on this Board. Thinking that some people CULLS could be what others are looking for, like Grade dog are cull to some people but to others they're not. Maybe Size to some could be a cull or to much barking in a Check could be to Trailer but to Gun Hunter it's not as long as it produces a rabbit in the long run. I think my culls would be legs that are not straight and a ( JAKE MOUTH ) or some call it a Bad bite. A Dog Hunt if he don't Hunt at all can't get the bunnie up or maybe lack of hunt a Cull. Some hounds are HOT nose and some COLD nose or MEDIUM nose to some this might be a Cull or Maybe Speed some would cull 5 in speed or 9 maybe a Cull to some. What do this think about this Word Cull
Not trying to get anyone
but was wondering. jmho
Re: CULL'S
To cull simply means to remove an animal from your breeding program because he/she does not meet your standard. It does not necessarily mean the dog is no good. The very next World Champion could be in your next litter but you may cull him at birth because you didn't like his markings. And last on my list would be the dog that doesn't hunt, he is definitely a cull and should be spaded/neutered because he could possibly be the most perfect pet for some family looking for a beagle but they do not hunt and just want a companion and this dog could just be the one they looking for.

Re: CULL'S
I will start and then follow as it gets rolling . After my recent offer of a fre beagle I was shocked at the conversation it created. But here are my personal feelings. I do not like dispatching what I feel is a substandard hound for what ever ther reason. I will do my level best to find new homes some have been just pets. I use to give papers until a few years back I listed a free female and it back tracked bad! A beagler that is still on this board came along and said he wanted to give it a try and before I knew it he had sold her as something she was not. Now this female is still out there and has my name on it and I have seen pups for sale out of it. This is the reason I no longer give papers. Every dog I have gotten rid of I have been up front as to the reason. I think the reason feelings are so strong are that some are trying to make money and selling mis-labeled hounds and if you have been in the sport any time you have met one. So if you have what you consider a cull it is that current owners absolute choice what is done with that hound and its paperwork if it has it. We as hounds men should not FORCE our thoughts on others . We can offer advice or suggestions but ultimately the choice ( good or bad ) belongs to the owner.

Re: CULL'S
Ken;
I know a guy who trials and had an oversize pup. He gave it to a young kid just getting started in hunting. Good deal for all involved, including the pup. I have a two-year-old that is too tall to trial. He's a good dog and would make a good hare hound for someone, but I like him too. And I run and hunt him with his two litter mates as often as I can. I trial his brother and sister.

Very good post Tom.
It's just my opinion but I feel that bad bite, crooked legs, cherry eye, and any other genetic flaw should never leave the breeders kennel. Yes conditions like cherry eye can be removed but by not breeding the hound that throws the cherry eye, regardless of how good they are, the condition goes away on its own.
Color, size, and speed are just a preference and I do not consider them culls.
I have a few hounds that I have taken over and because of the previous owners illness, they do not have papers. They are nice hounds that run well with good hunt. I was going to post them as free hounds without papers but after seeing the backlash from Toms post, I'm not sure what i will do with them.
I tried to give them to someome that frequents this forum but after all of the grilling from them I realized that they wanted perfect dogs with papers for free.

Re: CULL'S
I totally agree with tom.....
Years ago I had a male that was my best dog even over the dog I have today but he had red mite mange watch was a blood disorder and after spending hundreds of dollars try to heal him up finely a vet that deals only with skin problems told me it was pass on for a dog of his past and I should never bread him. When I call the guy that I got him from he told me she was wrong and talk me in to trial him after one year on of trials in the mid-west with two wins four 2 and two 4 I though I would bread him to my best female when the pups came and never should singed of the skin problem I was thinking that vet know nothing but after thous pups got older and wear bread every one produce the red MIT mange in ther pups it set me back for a long time in my kennel so now any pup with bow legs or skin, eye problem I cull before they even start running after they start they have one year to prove them self to be keep or cull

Yes, I see what you're saying I agree with how you are saying it. But to me I away thought that genetic the dog has like some has said crooked leg, skin condition like a Grey pup and after the dog gets older the hair falls outs, cherry eye, jake mouth or over bite. Our maybe this isn't genetic I guess a beagle I always thought as a Hunting dog that what I away thought they where Bred for to hunt and a dog with No hunt to me was a Cull. jmoOle Mule wrote:To cull simply means to remove an animal from your breeding program because he/she does not meet your standard. I have never heard of cherry eye being genetic. I have always been told it is from a plugged/infected tear duct. It can happen to ANY dog at any time. learn something new ever day

Are you trying to sell off Bud's hounds? I understood he gave you the hounds and money to take care of them. He thinks the world of you for helping him and believes you two are working somewhat together with them. Have you spoke to him about this at all?reddog1 wrote:Very good post Tom.

Re: CULL'S
Cherry eye is a genetic weakness in the connective tissue of the third(inner)eyelid. Once it's torn, the "flap" is always protruding and subject to irritation and infection causing it to swell and become inflamed looking like a cherry(thus the term cherry eye). It can be tacked back in place by a vet or removed but there is always the danger to the tear duct gland that may reduce or stop the production of tears thus causing another affliction called "dry eye", this has to be treated for the remainder of life with lubricant to keep the eye moistened or the eye may be lost for good.fasttrackpa wrote: I have never heard of cherry eye being genetic. Tear duct glands can be swollen and then return to normal with out the cherry eye, it comes from irritation and/or infection. One major contributor to this is a hound having a loose lower eyelid that easily allows dust or foreign objects into the eye (ie...seeds and stem from running in the brush).
I've added the loose eyelids on my list of culling even tho some of my old coon hounds had it...

Well I was just saying what a cull was, a dog with disease defects and the likes goes to the bone yard and I have a few there also.ken pack wrote:Yes, I see what you're saying I agree with how you are saying it. Re: CULL'S
I never seen cherry eye be a big problem have had a few over the last 12 years by few I mean like 3 .cut it out never seen any.problems that's just my experience ,never have had any more .
as far as culls goes. if a dog is mouthy it has to go ..too tight mouthed..gone.// trashy hard to break gone. crooked legs. gone. .over 15 inches gone ..under 13 most likely gone .if it has a lot of lemon and white ,chocolate and white ,or just a lot of white has a chance to stay anything with a lot of black must be gone lol.. however I do have a tri here but has a lot of white. ....must.run.7-8/on.speed. and hunt very good. to stay.
cull mostly is preference I would say ..to each his own //you own it you feed it ..your happy with it . doesn't really matter what anybody else thinks.

Re: CULL'S
Merriams dictionary definition of a "cull"
1cull transitive verb \ˈkəl\ : to select or choose (someone or something) from a group
: to control the size of (a group of animals) by killing some animals
Full Definition of CULL
1: to select from a group : choose <culled the best passages from the poet's work>
2: to reduce or control the size of (as a herd) by removal (as by hunting) of especially weaker animals; also : to hunt or kill (animals) as a means of population control
I know we all have different standards of "culling" but here is true definition

Re: CULL'S
Preacher, all I can say is your shortsightedness will pay off big dividends in the end at someones expense. I bought a hound one time that had the loose eyelids, bred her and got a whole litter of cherry eyed pups. I went an seen the daddy and two aunts, he had the loose eyelids and the two aunts had the cherry eye.
I kept the whole litter till they died to remind me where I failed. That may sound dumb but I had to build the nature at a cost, to not over look things in the future. I have that character flaw, getting off cheap and passing it on never taught me much except it coming back to haunt me after the damage was done. With our hounds and the way the pedigrees are stacked that can be a very scary thing to look forward too. jmho
