I built my house almost 8 yrs ago now. I generalled the entire project and did as much work as I possibly could while working full time with a lot of overtime. The biggest hassle to me was the bank. In past years after being approved for a loan, the bank would give you a book of checks. Now, most banks will give you 5 draws which makes it difficult to pay each individual contractor after their job is done. I think a man should be paid when the work is done.
Reputation and quality of work are more important than marginal costs. Do your homework on contractors, because the dollar value of their quotes isn't always an indicator of the quality of their work. You can save yourself several thousand dollars. I built mine for $226,000 and it would have cost me close to $300,000 if I hadn't generalled it. Good luck.
As a side note. Don't wait to finish your basement like I did if you can afford it.

If you dont have the skills to do the work or know if it is being done right you are headed down the path of destruction trying to do it your self. I have seen it time and time again people think they are saving money and end of costing them more.
If you do try it your self rember the only leverage you have with someone doing the work is money even if you hire someone to build it map out what is to be done for each point you pay them and dont pay till it is.
