FOOT OR NOSE??

Re: FOOT OR NOSE??
Budd hit on the head. Speed is the most overrated thing in beagling . Give me nose any day. Nose is the hardest thing to get and reproduce. Without nose you are not running in winter up here. Speed is a no issue, it's like saying you want a women that makes love fast. Who cares how fast she gets it done as long as she wants to have it and does it right, speed never comes into the equation. Hope I don't offend anyone with that explanation......dh

Re: FOOT OR NOSE??
Dogs need a good nose, but also the brains to use it correctly. Mouthy dogs are lacking the intelligence to know what scent they should give tongue on. Also, concerning speed, a dog with brains knows how fast his nose will let him run the track. In my opinion, most of the time a mouthy dog doesn't have more nose, it just lacks brains.

Yeah, if you live in the frozen tundra you probably need more nose. Breeders should breed for characteristics needed in a hound to be successful in their area. Down here in Ky, scenting conditions rarely get incredibly tough, so we need hounds with a lot of brains to decipher all of the different tracks they can smell.

Bring them big nosed dogs south in winter if they don't pick there heads up they will get left in dust .Dogs with big noses better have enough brains to go with it or the ant worth a nickel were I run . Different terrain needs different dogs ,rabbits that run like deer around here you better have dogs that can get up under them or you will see dogs cross one trail while rabbits three crossings over .

Re: FOOT OR NOSE??
If scenting conditions remained constant...which they don't...a little less nose might be fine...but with changing variables I will take more nose over less every time.
In my opinion, there are times when every hound( if it is decent) can run head high. Seems like the days when the conditions are much less favorable(which is much more of the time than head high days) that a stronger nosed hound that will stay in the track can make a good day out of average.
To sum it up they need to have enough nose to suit you....surely areas of running dictate what people are satisfied with.
I, personally, like too much nose as opposed to not enough. Of course, you will see early mouth with extreme noses...but that is okay by me if they move it to a jump..My opinions...then again I hear people say extreme nose with NO extra or early mouth...
I am still and always will be looking for that type of dog...guess mine lack brain power...LOL...but they suit me.

Re: FOOT OR NOSE??
It's okay to open early or bark out of place once in a while, but I'm talking about dogs that are clearly mouthy that bark all over the place. These dogs don't have more nose; just lacking brains. I've seen dogs many times that don't bark early or cold trail with the other packmates, end up showing more nose than any of them when the rabbit is up. We need to keep the nose in our hounds & breed for more brains to handle it in my opinion.
