Little pup help

Post by Indianabeagler »

I have an 8 month old pup that was started in a pen and will hunt like no tomorrow while in there and run a pretty good rabbit. But when you take him to the wild he doesnt do much of nothing. How can I get him to be like he is in the pen out in the wild?

If you are running in a pen that is frequented by other dogs and people, part of what you are seeing as hunt/search may be the pup running around looking for the other dogs that are or have been in the enclosure. Also the rabbit scent is usually stronger in an enclosure simply because the rabbits are contained in a smaller area and many enclosures are overstocked with game which is not the norm on the outside.

If I were you I'd keep the pup out of the enclosure for awhile and make it do the job on the outside. Hunt or search is a genetically inherited trait. Either they got it or they don't. You can't put it in them. If the pup has it, it should be just a matter of adjusting to being in the wild a few times and should adapt quickly.
