Dog Gone BARBED WIRE
After running today when I was unloaing the dogs my daughter said, Dad, Joe Joe's bleeding! I went over and looked and him and from his shoulder to his throat was torn, probably from barb wire! You could see right to the meat!!!
I couldn't get him into the vet so I figured I needed to step up and find a way to fix this. I picked him up and tied him down to the expanded metal that covers my dog trailer so that he could not move. I shaved him, washed it out first with a saline solution, then peroxide, then smeared orajel all over the cut. I waited a few minutes and then pinched it and he never made a peep. So I took a small needed and some dental floss and went to sewing. When it was all sewed up and tied, I put some more peroxide again then patted it dry then put super glue over it, let it dry, then wrapped it with a guaze then taped it.
What a crazy experience!
Have any of you ever had to stitch your dog yourself? Look forward to reading any of your stories.

Dang Goes Sorry to hear this!!!!!!!!!
hope he is ok!!!!
I personally have never had to do it to one of my beagles But i helped my Dad Sew up his Coon Dogs a couple times. He had a Sewing awl made for leather work That had a small needle with a spool on it the he kept 2 lb fishin line on. he would use mathialaide (sp) poor it in and iodine for the outside sew em up and in about a week to 10 days pull the line out by snipping it off with fingernail Clippers and pullin it threw.
Now i dont know for sure But according to my Vet book it says Not to use Peroxide because it kills the living Skin and meat!!! And that the best covering for it is a 3 in one antibacterial Cream like neosporin and as much air as it can get. Change the bandages a couple times a day and clean it real good with a 3% iodine solution Cheap Stuff and Is a cure all around here LOL
Sounds like you did a good job on it Just watch for any drainage or infection!!!!
Probably Some of that Dang Constantine Wire out there on the base. Nasty Stuff. Just watch him Close if ya Need anything you have my Number!!!!

Goes, make sure to leave a little opening at the bottom for drainage. You have no idea how long he was open and what kind of crud got in there.
When Michelle and I lived in ID, we came home one afternoon to find Molly with a 3" cut through the skin and we too could see the muscle. This was shortly after we purchased Hannah. I don't know if they were rough-housing or what happened, we figured she got it caught on a nail that was sticking out from the old fence. Anyway... we couldn't get the vet, he was out on a delivery of a horse or something... So, Michelle went out to the base, got all the stuff we needed and we commenced to doing the same thing you did. (Nice to have a Dr in the house.) We sewed it up tight after cleaning it the best we could. Well, after a couple of days, it was bulging and hot and opened on its own. Before we knew it, all the stitches were out. We made a trip to the vet and he said just to leave it open and it would heal up on its own. I had to smear anitbiotic ointment on it 2-3 times a day until it closed up. That took between 2 & 3 weeks, the hair grew back and you would never know it happened if you didn't know exactly where to look.
Good luck with your dog.

Be ye kind one unto another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you. Ephesians 4:32
Thanks all, so far so good. He is very stiff and you can see he favors moving his head around allot but seems to be doing well, just in some pain.
After having this happen I can gaurantee that I'll be addind a few moe items to my first aid kit just in case something like this happens again.
TC, thanks for the tip. Smoke and I are going over next week to do a wire clean up, this is twice in 2 months that this is happened to us on post.
I have to send some praising kudos to my 13 year old daughter who was woozy during the stitching but never skipped a beat by talking with the dog and comforting him the whole time. That had to be tough.
I'll keep you all updated on his progress, when I change his bandages later maybe I'll be able to take some pictures.

Goes, you can give dogs asprin for pain, give 1 adult or 2 childrens asprin every 8 hours or so. I did this with the directions of a vet when I had a dog hit by a car and his back leg was broken, it really helped him. I have heard not to give them tylenol as it has an ingredient that is not good for them, don't really know but asprin is safe. Also all the bear hunters in this area have stapling kits for thier hounds that may get torn up, might try looking into this for your emergency kit. Hope this helps, good luck to you and your dog. Goes,
Sounds like ya done good! You should however put the hound on antibiotics just in case as a peventative measure. The fish tank ones are just as good as any although I use injectable because its all I have on hand usually. I had an old male one time get a huge lump on the side of his jaw that I thought was atumor and then an infected tooth. I was not sure what it was but he was going south real quick as it grew in leaps and bounds he began to waste away. I put him on IM antibiotics at doses that were huge compared to normal and I pushed the fluids like crazy to keep his kidneys flowing good. I a couple of days that thing erupted in the most nasty stinking green daraing mess I have ever seen on animal or human. I gag just thinking about it. He began doing much better but it must have itched because I went out and found him with a hole in his hide the size of an orange. I could actually visualize the musles in his neck. I could not keep him still so I muzzled him and duct taped his legs and had my cousin lean on him. I shaved the site and sutured it up except for a drain hole. In just a few days of antibiotics and sutured he not only made a great improvement but acted like he was two again. This hound was around ten or so and acted just like a new dog. It was an unbelievable transformation. I have sutured several hounds over the years and do all the doctoring except real surgery type things. I figure if I can do this stuff on humans everyday then why not my hounds? After all if I screw up its not like they will be getting on the phone to call some lawyer to sue me! LOL

When my life on earth is ended....this is all I'm gonna say...Lord I've been a hard working pilgrim on the way!
Hi Goes,
I just read your post. Give your daughter a big hug for me. I know how hard that is to see one of your pets like that. I could handle all of that, sewing up pigs, lambs, etc., until my ony ran into a pine tree and put a big hole in her shoulder. When the vet came out and started sticking his fingers in there, I got really woozy too.
I'm glad you had all the stuff with you to stitch him up! Sounds like he's going to make it. Give him a good scratch behind the ears for me and Good Luck!

Update. After checking Joe Joe today he is doing fantastic, he doesn't seem to be in as much pain and as a bit more mobility.
NYH, will do on gettting him some antibodies! I'll also make sure he doesn't call an attorney
Vicki, he enjoyed the scratch...lol.
Hare Hunter, great tip on the aspirin and the staple kit is a definite for the kit.
I'll update again this weekend
Thanks for all the replies

hey goes i would still get the dog checked by a vet. i work at a vets office and rarely do we sew lacerations up if they are deep until the bacteria is gone, especially ones from metal. you dont want to trap the infection under the skin. if this happens you may end up creating an abscess or the dog may become toxic from septacemia (sp?). this can kill your dog before you know it. just to make a little correction to Goes post on the barbed wire...
It was Razor wire..... The crap the Army uses to keep the bad people out or the good people in.... LOL This stuff grabs you like briar bushes and if you keep pulling, it will rip/cut you more. (We should pick it all up and drop it off over on the Commanding Generals yard.. See how he likes it)....
Im glad the "ol' screecher" is doing great! He's come a long way for something like that to hurt him... Maybe your daughter would like to be a vet now? I think I have some left over anit biotics from when Tobey was cut by that stuff.... I'll look and see when I get home.. Ive been stuck here at the station for another 72 hour shift...

Finally remembered to take the camera out with me when I changed his bandage. The piece of skin hanging out is what is left from the initial contact with the "RAZOR" wire ...lol Smoke. It was entirely shreaded and tattered so I had to sew around it. He is doing really well and I am proud to announce I will be using this picture as part of my entrance packet for medical school
