A general forum for the discussion of hunting with beagles, guns, clothing and other equipment and just talking dawgs! (Tall tales on hunting allowed, but remember, first liar doesn't stand a chance)
I currently raise walker hounds to run in fox and coyote pens and I do a little deer running with them on the outside.
I have a few questions. First of all, I was looking to get two beagles to run rabbits with a few friends, but I would also like to keep them in the house for the kids. Since I have my walkers out in cages...they aren't really pets to the kids. But I am also the type of person that likes hounds to stand out in a pack of hounds. Can you have beagles living in the house and be a stand out hound?
Also, I would want some six week old pups. To get your top notch beagles would you go to some of the Ch. field trialers to find some pups? Someone who hasn't dealt with beagles much, like myself doesn't know about who to get them from but I know what a hound should do.
Also, one more, are beagles like walkers where you raise them and run them with other hounds to get them started or does it take more training of some sort
i think it helps any dog to run with a older dog to get it going?and i also have a pair of full blooded beagle pups around 6 months old that would make good hunting dog and great pets want 125.00 for the pair?
I have 2 confirmation beagles and one small pack field (11 yr old tomorrow). All 3 live in the house and hunt like fiends. Read some of the training postings to get an idea of what it takes to train a beagle. For house I would suggest one at a time so the dog bonds to you and not to the othe dog. Ask lots of questions of breeder- there is field or confirmation, registered or un. Good luck.
i have several dogs and my best dog is a female that lives in the house there all good dogs but she is the leader of the pack good luck getting started have fun
Where are you located at??
maybe you could go watch some of the dog's the guy's on here run.
talk is cheap and every body has there own opinion on what is a good dog.
You may like one stile of dog and not another.
yes beagles can make good house pets but they must be run with strange dog's while there young so they don't develop packing problems.
Unless thats not an issue with you..
If you live up by michigan youre more than welcome to come watch mine run.

I have 2 Beagles that are inside Dogs. They mind like a dream. The constant interaction with people helps a lot. I have a 7 month old pup that I ran 4 to 1. Four times solo 1 time with my older dog. That way he learned to hunt on his own and not rely on my older dog. Hes is doing real well. See if you can find people in your area that run beagles and ask them if you can go with them to see watch their dogs run. Try to watch several different peoples dogs if possible. That way you can get an Idea of what kind of dog you like. Most beaglers would be glad to let you go. Once you see what style of dog you like. You can go from there. The beaglers that you go with will probably be able to set you up with a dog. Or know where to get one.
Training beagles is very similar to training other scent hounds. You cannot train them to hunt. That part seems to be genetic. Regarding training you can pretty much get by with four commands: Come, No, Down and Tallyho.
You can (and should) teach the first 3 in your yard. The last one is the one they learn the easiest after they are started.
The old timers tell me that the best hunting dogs are the one that slepp where you sleep. Good luck!
I live in Louisiana. They have a couple of people that I hunt rabbits with and even though their beagles do OK, they don't live up to what I think they should be doing. Even though I like to hunt, I like the chase more.
They had a guy who won the National beagle championship up in North Louisiana but that was running coyote and fox and he was running a bunch of tall beagles or what I call a beagle walker cross...LOL...I am interested in seeing a rabbit field trial...do they have these and where are they located? I don't see much of that in my state.
Can someone tell me how they score beagles in a field trial?
Where in Louisiana are you located? The Livingston Beagle club located in the Livingston\Walker\Watson area runs ARHA Little Pack format field trials. We would be glad to have you come out and check things out.
I live in Breaux Bridge and run my Walkers around your area. I have contacted Branko's Beagles and and looking for a few really good beagles.
I would like to come and watch some good beagles run field trials.
I am going hunting tomorrow with my buddies in Welsh. Wish I had some beagles to run with them...
