Just bought my first beagle.

I just got him he is an 8 wk. old tricolor. Was wondering the best way to start him. Do not have access to a starting pen, just plenty of room to run. Thinking of buying an older dog to help get him started. Is this the best way or is there an easier one? Any suggestions would be helpful.

sounds like you are on the right track...best way is to find someone who has dogs to run with...but for right now just let it be a puppy...yard training is a good idea teaching it basic commands...

go out and get a tame bunny. The pup will chase it and trap it so as long as you can be quick you can save the bunny to be used another day. i have never found anything to get a young pup off on the right foot as a tame bunny.

best of luck with your new huntin bud.

Thought about that too. What kind of bunny? Will one of those white ones work. Don't know where to get the wild kind at around here.

white ones work great, easier for a sight chase. Check the paper or pet stores. It may cost around $15.00 or so but it's cheaper than a starting pen. Any color will work though.
i have 2 16 week old pups that have been on the tame bunny for a little over a week now and they are pounding the crap out of it. I have to be quick...lol
What I do now is release the bunny before I release the dogs. It makes the pups search for it, when they can't see it they start using their noses. It's awesome to watch.

Take care
