Sounds simple enough to me. If they are started and run on cottontail then they will do just fine. Like Bob said sometimes the hare to cottontail transition can be tough and some can never fully make the switch. I have seen and heard enough to know that given the chance Sport pups will hammer cottontail. I look forward to one day giving one a try.

Fair enough HatterasBob, if the dog is 11 years old, that makes sense. Have people just been mostly using his pups for Hare dogs or are there alot of his pups running cottontail too?

Tim,
The sad truth is he had very few breeding until a year ago. One breeding yielded 4 pups and 4 FC, that's hard to beat. The second breeding to this bitch had complications and she was spayed. darn shame! One trial in NY (?) had 1st through NBQ all sport pups in little females I think it was. Sport pups were 1st and 2nd in little bitches at the Natioanls and sport pup and grandpup were 1st and 2nd in little males at the same Nationals. WOW! I believe there were others placing also. So now everyone want to breed to him and he is getting old. Like I said, you snooze, you loose! Everyone wants Sport blood, now, including Branko. He is producing, period. I've never seen a hare dog that couldn't run a cottontail, hunt is the problem. There aren't any briars in hare country. I've never seen a Sport pup run a cottontail, but I'm positive they will. If they are started in briars then briars won't be an issue. Check back in a few weeks we'll know more.

Everyone always talks about the stud dog as though the bitch wasn't even there. In my opinion the key to getting good pups is starting with a good quality bitch line. Trials are not always a good indicator of how well a dog is producing, if a guy makes a cross and sends all of the pups to guys that are hard core trialers, then those dogs will get more exposure, which doesn't always mean they are better dogs. As for stud dogs I have never seen SPort nor any of his pups go so I can't speak on their abilities on cottontail, from what I understand he throws a lot of smaller dogs(13 inch) unless bred to big bitches and since I don't run small dogs I have not jumped on the bandwagon. I would have to say that Timberjack has to be right up there with sport when it comes to Stud dogs, I believe he also had places on cottontail and hare when he finished for his FC which shows he can get it done on either. I have seen a pup or two out of him on cottontail and they can get it done with very good hunt also. As far as Sport dogs on cottontail, only time will tell if they have what it takes. I am sure they will do fine, but since I run big males and females I tend to lean toward the 15 inch studs that I know throw big dogs, with that being said I think you could list quite a few that are already proven on cottontail or come from dogs that have produced good cottontail dogs, FC Drew's Blue Storm, FC Mr STubb's Timber Jack, FC Hutsons Tracker Sam, Pine Mtn Chester, FC Hardenburgh's Baby Blu and the Awful bawling stuff just to name a few.

In my opinion this is a impossible question to answer w/ out more qualifications. Would be like asking who is the best singer in the USA right now? Well, do you like country, rock, pop, rap, opera, jazz, etc. To many varibles to compare and people have too many prefences to make a claim like - this is the best stud dog. My guess is the best singer in the USA may not even have a record contract and sing on the radio. Very well could be a carpenter or a truck driver that sings in the church choir. I'd say there is just as good of chance that the best studd dog is stickly a gun dog tied up to some rabbit hunter's back porch that's never been to a field trial.

I do have a speedy sport female and I only hunt cottontails, I huted her, all last year and she has no problem at all, she can gear down on the check and walk if she has to, and she can speed up. I am very happy with her.

Don't get me wrong I have nothing against Sport he is a really fine hound from what I hear, but I know the folks that made the post and I know they run cottontails. They are looking for a good stud, and there are plenty out there, but if you are going to breed and are not looking to take risk then it is better to breed to a dog that is a proven cottontail dog or a producer of proven cottontail dogs. I just haven't seen any Sport pups run cottontail so it would be hard for me to say that he is the best stud dog out there for cottontails. There are many others out there that have consistently thrown dogs that do well on cottontails under the gun and in trials. As more Sport pups come south we will see in time how they do. Hopefully they will do very well, but as with any other stud the bitch that he was bred to will play a major role.
