Trialing

Post by Big Dog »

Age is one factor, but the main factor is ability. It is probably best to get at least one gun season on a dog before trialing for those of us who gun hunt anyway. You can put a dog in a few derby trials at around a year old, but again that should be based on the dogs ability not just his age. If the dog runs a good rabbit and you think it would be competitive then by all means take it. If the dog isn't the right style or lacks the ability then there isn't much use in taking it to a trial. I try to only trial dogs that I think have a chance of winning, I like to support clubs but I am not just trying to make a donation when I show up.(LOL) Run your hound a lot, and then take him out with someone with experience and ask their opinion before taking it to a trial. Go to a trial and watch and see if you think your dog will fit in.

BIG DOG IS RIGHT BUT I STRONGLY SUGGEST AT LEAST 2 GUN SEASONS, NOTHING CAN MAKE UP FOR RABBIT FUR ,KILLING RABBITS MAKE DOGS PEAK OUT ,NOT CHASING RIBBONS- DONT GET IN TO BIG OF A HURRY -PLENTY OF TIME -THINK SHOTGUN NOT TALLY STICKS, ;) JUST MY OPINION ;) GOOD LUCK
