Ground pens with fence flooring?

Post by sgc »

Anyone ever try building their fenced ground pens on top of fencing (or similar material) laid on the ground as a floor, then with sand on top? This would stop dogs from digging and allow drainage. I'm thinking of doing this but don't want to put in the effort if it doesn't work well. The floor (fencing, etc.) would have to lay tight so it wouldn't buckle. Any ideas?

That will work but you need to make sure you take stakes or something to hold the fence down to the ground.Small stakes with a staple through the wire and attached to the top will work. Then drive flush to the ground.

I have a 50 X 50 foot pen on grass and dirt. I laid a apron of fence about 2 feet wide on the ground on the inside to prevent digging out, works for me. :D

works great for me . go to local garden supply and get some sod staples to hold the apron down.

ground fence

A friend of mine has two dogs that have tried to dig to china. We dug down 12", and in 24", bent a four foot piece of fence in half at a 90 deg angle. Attatched one half securely to the fence and the other half flat on the bottom. If your ground is overly sandy like his was, try to find some clay to back fill with. His dogs still dig holes they can fit inside of but have never dug out. Maybe if everyone keeps inbreeding the beagle breed they will create dogs that just chew right through the fence and we will have to just let them run free like coyote. hehe
Good luck on your project!
