AKC SPO vs ARHA LP

Post by Adam M. O'Donnell »

Would you agree the same dog winning ARHA LP. would do well in AKC "midwest" style SPO ??????
If not, then why wouldn't you agree?

I always thought (and I've not really been around enough to know) that Mid-west style hounds were super fast, and didn't work there checks from inside out, but rather accepted the "swing" out and drive type dog. Hmmm!

No way, a LP dog would be on the grond about 30 seconds in a SPO Trial.

MIKE THERE HAVE BEEN DOGS THAT COULD MAKE THE TRANSITION KEVIN MONROE OWNS ONE ------- BUT WHEN IT COMES TO 15" MALES
VERY FEW MAKE THE TRANSITION.THAT I KNOW OF MAYBE SOMEONE ELSE CAN CHIME IN THAT KNOWS . ARHA RULES OVER THE YEARS ARE TO DARK AND GRAY FOR ME AT LEAST I KNOW WHERE I STAND IN MIDWEST ........... PLUS 1 HOUR CAST LEAVE TO MUCH TO LUCK BEEN BEAT BY DOGS THAT COULD NOT CIRCLE A RABBIT BUT COULD BY CHANCE JUMP IT . ANY DOG FAT OR SMALL CAN RUN 1 HOUR --- WE HAD DOGS STAY DOWN 4-6 HOURS IN NY AT TRIAL ,BETTER SHOW UP IN SHAPE OR STAY HOME ..... OL BLUE THATS BEEN ON CHAIN FOR SEVERAL MONTHS AND SELDOM RUN MAY WIN AT ARHA BUT AFTER 2-3 HOURS IF HE DONT DIE MORE THAN LIKELY IN AKC HE DIDNT GET FAR
ONCE AGAIN MY THOUGHTS ONLY

LP vs SPO

Post by Big Dog »

Some of your cleaner running dogs that run LP can, and are winning and placing in Midwest SPO. Jeff and Mark Brown, Tom Floyd, Kevin Monroe, and Ron Wagner run both formats and have had success in both. The key is having a dog that has some foot but isn't wild and crazy and at least has some idea of where the point of loss is. A dog can luck into a win in arha sometimes, but in AKC he will have to do a better job of earning what he gets. I agree with Jimbo on conditioning, any dog can show up and run for an hour, I see it all the time at LP trials, people will bring a dog that hasn't been run in recent history, just hoping that he will get lucky and win. From what I have seen most people that bring dogs to an AKC trial have put plenty of running time on them so they are at least in shape. I enjoy both formats and will continue to run both in the future.

My PP grand won a Midwest trial and has made the winners pack in all but one of the hunts he was entered in. He is in the 13 inch class. He is probably a little to close in the checks compared to the other dogs I've seen competing in Midwest SPO. On the day he won, it seemed like he got all the long checks. :D

I agree with Big Dog about a clean LP hound can do well in both formats. I have only been to one AKC trail and had two dogs in the final pack of the 15 in males. One placed 3rd he is a LP champion and the other dog got pick up. I run mostly Little Pack and love it. There are alot of things about AKC trail I liked to. They will bring back the best dogs. Sometimes thats not always the case in little pack. The one that scores the most is not always best dog in the cast.

My running partner has a male that is a akc, and nkc lp. champ. This dog swings, and is very fast. I have not been to a akc trial, so I thought this was how they all ran.

I'm going to have to pay close attention when I go to this AKC trial at the end of the month. I was at one before several years ago, and I thought they were pretty rough. But that was then.
I have male who everyone tells me is fast and should do well in AKC, He has good line control and likes the front, but he will swing in a check. He comes from ARHA Little Pack Grand Ch. Sire and Ch. Dam. I'll let you all know how fast they pick him up!!

The one I went to the dogs had a little swing. They hunt a check fast from the inside out. When they hit that line out of the check. they take it out of there hard and fast. If your dog does not go right then he will be left behind.
