Beagle on fox trials
Moderators: Pike Ridge Beagles, Aaron Bartlett
John,
I have a couple of Canadian bred brothers, one is completely straight. The other needed to be broken. They are very smart dogs. It only took two maybe three times with the trashbreaker to straighten him out. Now I can drop him in a herd of deer without a collar and he won't touch them.
Most guys don't know but the really serious trialers in Canada run their beagles on deer and in fox pens for conditioning and speed. Oops, the secret is out. You didn't hear that from me. Here in the states we don't want dogs to run off game. Hey, different strokes for different folks. One man's trash is another man's treasure.

John, you're welcome! If you're looking to add size, you'll want to go south to those fox trials. They must be AKC registered to compete, but some admittedly prefer them to be 16-17" tall, lol. The Canadian fox trials are pretty strict about the hounds not going over 15", so if you already run biguns, more than likely they won't help in that area. They shore-nuff would put the speed and stamina in, though. They're bred to run pretty tough that way.
Here in Virginia we have a few clubs that run the beagles on fox. I have one that would do good but he is strictly rabbit but now his brother is one of my best deer dogs. He is Akc reg and is about 15.5 in. I run in a lot of speed and drive trial on rabbits and they are run just like a fox trial. Go to this web site and there is more in info on beagles on fox. http://www.speeddogs.net/ I have a guys name and number here in Virgina that if anyone would like it send me a pm and ill give it to you. From what i have heard some do run Akc stuff and some are non reg. The can be up to 17in

Mr. Dan Kane
Everyone on here is trying to be helpful. Your name came up because your dog Duggie won 1st place and your dog Clem won 3rd. Good looking dog posted here also. We wanted to hear from an expert. I also e-mailed you on the address posted on the Canada site, 1000 lakes, etc. It won't go through.

Osda sunalei, John! They don't come any better than Dan Kane
Dan barely knows how to use these boards, lol, but he's trying because you guys brought up a segment of beagling that is near and dear to his heart. He had a lengthy, informative post about the CDN fox trials all typed in for you, and he lost the post; didn't hit the submit button or something. He was very tired from the day, got a bit frustrated and quit for the night. I'm sure he will chat with you all about the fox trials when he has a fresher head. (we were chatting on messenger when this happened and I was trying to coach him through registration, etc.) Please give him the benefit of the doubt here until he gets a handle on posting, then you guys can p*$$ each other off on a level playing field if need be.
Tohidu!

Mr. Alabama John,
Isn't that Bev a kind person...truth is I certainly was tired but I also must admit I had a few libations as well and just could not follow the messenger and the site at the same sitting.
Thanks for the compliment re "an expert".. I certainly don't think of myself at that level. I have been blessed over the years with both some very good dogs and having the pleasure of meeting some very good people in beagling from all types of trials.
If there is any information about the Canadian Beagle Fox Trial Assoc. that you may wish I will do my best to provide same.
Sorry but you have used the wrong email address. It is dkane638@msn.com.
Have good day.

Mr. Kane
It seems running Fox and Coyote is the thing of the future and certainly running in pens is. I and I know many others that would appreciate any advice you would be willing to share. You sure got some good looking dogs, just as I like, and also a good positive kennel name in Happyrun. All is well!
Yes. Bev is great. She speaks Cherokee too.

Wado, John! Usti tsi woni tsalagi. (Not much, though, lol. I'm still learning) My grandmother was half Cherokee, and I already know how to speak my other half...Irish. Here was the first Irish sentence I learned:
"Yes, please, bring me a Killian's and keep one on deck..."
Now If I could find a way to speak Cherokish...
"Howatsu, esginehvsi ama asuyvdi wisgi (which sounds an awful lot like "whiskey", btw). Tsitsanelv. LMAO!!!
Ok, ok, I'll translate. "Please pass the alcohol. I rode with him." (That's the closest I could get.)
I guess fox pens and fox hunting used to be a pretty big sport here in Indiana, but I believe they used regular Foxhounds for it. The sport pretty much died out around here, and I don't know if any of the pens even still exist. I sure would have loved hearing those big dogs on a fox. Here's a pic from a fox pen in Canada:

John, I agree running in pens is the salvation of Hound Field Training & Trials in most areas. I don't think pens are the best thing for any hound breed but it seems all types are getting squeezed out of training and trialing in the wild both in Canada and the USA.
I believe our beagles and fox hounds are developing into a different type of running dog because of the extensive use of pens, especially for training.
I doubt, and hope we will not see the end of LPH trials.
However I have several personal preferences for training and trialing beagles on fox rather than on hare in this area.

You're crazy!
That picture of a fox reminds me of a painting on our wall, titled "woodland encounter" drawn by another Bev, Bev Dolittle my favorite artist. Look up this painting and see the obvious Red Fox your eye is drawn to. Keep looking and see if you see anything else!
All her paintings are like that.
I have a friend that starts all his pups on fox to teach them to run and when they can really stretch out, he breaks them off and only lets them run rabbits.
Loved to hear a good July pack run through cotton fields and swamps. it was real popular hear many years ago when they all ran loose. Made the hollars ring!
Dan, how do you get your pups started? What do they trace back to. Again, sure racey looking.

John, when I was strictly running hare I always took the litter out together a few times with their mother. when I seen which ones didn't play around I concentrated on them one at a time with their mother. Once they began to pack I worked them alone. Quite a long process but the I believe they have to learn to run game by themselves to be more than just a pack dog. I have been critizied for culling too quick, but I feed them and if I don't like them.............down they go.
Since hare are as scarce as hen's teeth here and I'm concentrating on fox, I just take them to a fox pen again with one older dog and let the chips fall same as above.
I got my first registered beagle from Bob McGlashing's Robanit's Kennel in Nova Scotia Canada when I lived there. His dogs came from brace beagles in Pennsilvania, FC Oakleaf Buddy prdominately, and I have stuck to that line as close as possible over the years with outcrossing to good hard hunting males and then back into mine. I like well put up slick dogs with lots of starting hunt and guts galore.
The CKC Official beagle standard reads as follows," A Miniture Foxhound, solid and big for his inches, with wear and tear look of the hound that can last in the chase and follow his quarry to the death"
That's good enough for me...
