Favorite time of year for runnin'

Post by Schag »

This is my favorite time of the year to run dogs! Big buck rabbits are out looking for companionship and will give the hounds a ride! Last night I had one of the best runs that I have had in a long time. A big buck rabbit gave the dogs all they could handle in a deep woods. He ran down the hill and back up, running down a creek to throw the dogs off and back up the hill. He was a good running rabbit, smart rabbit, and made few mistakes until he ran into a clearing and sat down on the dogs obviously tired from travelling/breeding/ and being ran, hoping the dogs would run bye, well he found out that they were on his tail and tried to make one last spurt but..... Well, I believe you know the rest of the story. Anyway, I hope he bred about four times that day.  :D

The only thing I am weary of right now are rabbits that travel taking you to a road, and coyotes are starting to make their dens for the pups and are very territorial. May all of your runs be good runs.

This is also my favorite time of year to run. I have ran everday the last 5 days and the runs have been great. Iam working with two young males right now one that was started back in Decemeber and the other I picked up a week and a half ago, this 10 month old male was unstarted and just 4 times out he is now started and rabbit crazy. Last week we still had snow on the ground the dogs were finding about one rabbit for 2 hrs in the evening and running was not good.I was out Sat. morning i could tell the rabbit were about to move, yesterday the bucks were out took 2 of my young females 1 1/2 yrs they ran with the pack this season wanted run them w/o the vets I was impressed these two young ladies showed they learned alot.Hunted hard, picked checks well, stayed in the check area fired out of the checks and pushed br'er rabbit.I was glad to see the bunnies i couldn't find any during the deep snow of Feb.For training this is my time of the yr.But guess what else was out TICKS thats the only thing that I don't like.I got 4 young pups i'm going to run the fur off them by june the worse tick month i;m going to know what their made of. Alot of soloing, doubles, runner take your mark.

I CAN SEE GRASS!!!! , In about 2 weeks the runnin will be perfect, dewed up mornings, mating bucks drop their guard and GIDDY UP what a great time. I love the winter but God has granted a season no better than spring with the young dogs.

I'm with goes, for the first time since the 3rd week of November. I CAN SEE GRASS! But the temps have been up around 70 for the last few days and the ground is good and wet! Tonight my male got on big buck that was running big ole circles! He took him for 2 almost out of hearing range and I had to take him off due to darkness. It was fun to hear a good hard run for the first time in a while.

Running for the last week here has been sparodic. If you jump a female (probably pregnant), the runs are not too good. They are short runs, usually hole-ing fairly quickly and several checks. If you jump a buck rabbit, you will know it fast. Strong runs, few, if any checks, wide open running.
