Confirmation, Structure, or whatever!
About 20 years ago, I had the best Beagle that I have ever owned. She was two years old, jumped nearly every rabbit no matter who I hunted with, would not run off game, stradled the line and was always the lead dog, would retrieve any wounded bunny, handled like a dream, worked a check from the inside out, and was great in the kennel. She could hunt from daylight to dark and never get tired.
But she had one fault that concerned me greatly. She had an overbite. The bottom jaw stuck 1/16th of an inch over her top jaw. I could not sleep of a night worrying about that overbite. I even took her to an orthodontist and he refused to put braces on her. Finially, one sleepless night, I could take it no more. So, I went to the kennel and shot her. LOL

The front teeth are supposed to touch on top and bottom. Some dogs have overbites or underbites. In some registries, that is an automatic disqualification for Bench Shows.
As for shooting a great dog with an overbite, I doubt it ever happens. But, no matter how good of rabbit dog they are, they should never be used in a breeding program.
If you ever seen a female with an underbite try to bite the umbilical cord from puppies, you would never breed a female with an underbite.

What you are discribing is called a "pincer" bite. (if you mean that the tips of the teeth should touch)Redtick wrote:The front teeth are supposed to touch on top and bottom. .
With almost every breed on the planet a "scissor" bite is considdered normal, and with some, like Labradors, "a pincer bite should be severly penalized". (quoted from Lab standard)
I just find it unusal that the proper bite is not mentioned in the Beagle standard.

I agree, the correct bite is a scissor bite. But, I have Bench Championed lots of dogs and in the registries I show in, as long as the front teeth touch, a dog can not be scratched or disqualified. And, when they are disqualified, they are wrote up and can not win a Championship. I make no claim to know all of the different breed's standards. I mostly show hounds.
