water yard hydrant.... how deep to bury line/how big of feed

Post by ant »

installed 3 yard hydrants yesterday.

well ditchwitched 260' and installed three 6' yard hydrants useing 1'' black 200 psi poly pipe. were i am about to tie into is 3/4 copper feed line in the basement.

my question is;;;;;

1. is the 3/4 line that i am going to tap in going to provide me with good flow to wash down the kennel?

2. it was hard to ditchwitch 3' down (feed line)in some areas to prevent freeze ...
some places it was down 20"-24" but for the most part it was 30'' down.

do you thinh it was buryed deel enought?

i am in n.j.

Live in VA. Don't know the building codes or frost line in NJ but can give you the principles to install. Call local building official. He can tell you what the building code requires for utilities services. He can also tell you what the front line is. You bury it below that frost line & it will not freeze. In VA the frost line is 9 in but utilities have to be 18in. Prevents from inadvertently damaging them with the ole shovel (spade). Do not compromise on this depth. If you do, one day it will come back & haunt you.

Wow! My hydrant is 5-1/2 feet deep and still froze this winter. We did have an unusually cold winter, though. Froze about 3 weeks ago and just started running Sunday morning. I didn't expect it to thaw out untl June. Good luck!

You will only have the preasure that you have at the start of the 3/4 line. By puting in a bigger line you only add volume not preasure. If you need more preasure you can buy a pump to put in the line, as they do with sprinkler systems. It sounds like you are deep enough for your location. Hope this helps.

I installed 1 of these rite by my kennel. Mine is 4-5' deep. I also put 2" pvc conduit and pulled the 3/4" water line threw it so it gets heat from my cellar and the plastic barrel the hydrant is in is 5' deep and it sit on 1' of 3/4 stone and the barrel is surrounded by the stone 1' to top of grade to let the warm from the ground rise up threw it. Hope it helps,Campbell
