A Vets remedy

Post by sgc »

Took my female to the Vets because she had a sore on her leg that wouldn't heal. Vet said it was due to her licking & bothering it all the time. He gave me a bottle of a mixture they make up from over the counter "Heet" and "Bitter Apple". The Bitter Apple tastes bad & stops her from licking. Has anyone heard of Bitter Apple & know where to purchase it? I think you can get Heet from the drug store (???). I believe its like Ben Gay or other rubbing compounds. But I've never heard of Bitter Apple ????

A lot of pet supply stores carry bitter apple, it's used to keep pets away from things you don't want them chewing on. You can also find it in the Dr.'s Foster and Smith catologue or on their website. I think it's drsfosterandsmith.com.

Yeah Bitter Apple can be bought at the drug store.

I have a funny story about the stuff. It works under normal conditions, but I tried unsucessfully to domesticate a hunting beagle a couple of years ago. I had moved into an apartment and had to get rid of my pack. I decided to keep this male pup because he was a great all around dog. I was placing him in a dog carrier during the day and noticed that he was having seperation anxiety when I was leaving. The wire door was bent all up, so I decided to get the Bitter APple and spray the cage wire so that he would not destroy it. The first morning I put him in it and was about to leave and I heard him making all kinds of loud noises, I looked in on him and he was chewing on the cage, the funny thing was he was foaming at the mouth because of the Bitter Apple but was so upset he kept right on going. He looked like Cujo. Ha

I use a product called Cut & Heal. It's suppose to be for horses but it really works great and the dogs won't lick it. I think it is around $6.00 for a pint.

thanks for the responses. I may try that cut & heal in the future. It sure is a lot cheaper than the $10 the vet charged for a 3" bottle.
