A general forum for the discussion of hunting with beagles, guns, clothing and other equipment and just talking dawgs! (Tall tales on hunting allowed, but remember, first liar doesn't stand a chance)

Yea but can you make a dog hunt like you can teach it to sit, shake or roll over? I have found that you can make a dog do A LOT of things but you can not make it hunt.

I respectfully disagree with you Elliott.
The only way you can teach a dog to hunt is if your dog has the brains to comprehend on what your trying to teach or tell them what to do.
This new pup I got was born with the desire and the nose power. I believe the extreme desire she already has and been showing me was passed down to her. The breeder told me that he thinks she won't lack any desire. He was right.

So you are saying you can take a dog that don't have any hunt and teach it to do so??????

For some reason I stuggle with this idea. I know for me I rather have a dog that wants to naturally hunt so I can use all the much more time to enjoy it and not have the headach of trying to teach it something that should come naturally to it. Who knows who's right or wrong but regardless we have to like what we have and that's all that matters! I just try to look at the instink to hunt like the instink to swallow your food. If you do have the instink to swallow then you'll make it, If you don't then you won't. LOL!

Also if the dog has smarts then he should be smart enought to know what he should be going out and do on his own and not have to be taught to do so. Make since? I'm just saying he/she should be smart enought to know what it should be doing and not have to be taught it.

Casy,
No problem here whatsoever. I'm cool and we can disagree and I can stil be cool as heck with you. Heck I can even give you a hug when and if I ever meet ya. It's just that I know people can and will see things differently and all can be ok. Just keep an open mind with things and don't form an opinion to make excuses for bad quailities in our dogs. Gotta go, leaving work. Peace brother and there is no problem here dude.

Yeah it makes since, but I wonder how many great beagles were pointed in the right way?? I am sure there are a lot of great dogs that never had to be shown what to do, but I bet there are a lot that were that made FC or IFC, HBCH LP GRCH.....
I didn't really show this new pup where the rabbit scent was at, she found it and headed to the rabbit, then tore it up. I believe this pup and maybe others in this litter was born with that extreme desire.

I wouldn't form an opinion to excuse a bad dog, that dog would be a pet or would end up 6ft under. By the way, your a hard man to get ahold of since your a single man now!!! lol
I have had a few dogs over the years that were very intelligent, but had no hunt. You can't train a dog to have desire. Desire=Hunt. You can train them to go into cover or get away from your feet, but that doesn't mean that theyre hunting. If a dog doesn't have the natural desire to hunt and find rabbits, then there's no hope for them. JMHO

If hunt is learned then why don't we see more poodles in the field. They are said to be the smartest dogs. Beagles have been bred for a certain purpose and same thing with all hunting breeds. I train German Shephards to guard and attack...not really, just bring out the natural instints of the dog. I love the nature VS nurture debates.

I believe it can be done. Every thing is possible.
If you can teach a dog to hunt i would like to know the secret Breeders have breeding hunt in thier dogs for years bet they like to know to but my opinion of hunt is probaly different than someone elses opinion
I'm in the "they either have it or they don't" group. I just got rid of a dog that I tried and tried and tried to get her to hunt harder and she just plain wouldn't do it. She reminded me of watching a kid playing a sport when you know his dad is pressuring him into doing it.................you can just tell when their heart isn't in it. They'll do it but they're never gonna be great at it. And before it's brought up yes there are people that are great at some things and are just too lazy to put in the effort.............same with dogs too............it can work on both sides.
