Breeding for a Field Champion, or taking a dog out to the field trials trying to make a FC?? This question also applies to other registries and/or formats!!
harner, Not sure I understand the question, are you asking if it is more difficult to breed F.C. Caliber hounds or Make F.C's. out of "Regular Hounds" on Good attendance? Field Champions can be made from what I call a lower quality hound than what should be deserving of the Title. , But True Field Champion "Caliber" hounds are born.
I can't speak to beagle's with titles as that is something I have never tried to obtain. I have however did so with coonhounds. What I will say is that when starting with the best possible bred hound you can is a plus in only stacking the genetic ability to do what needs to be done to overtake the game desired. The next thing is allowing those genetic traits to be honed in by repetition or time in the field where the animals instincts to pursue their game is polished via rote learning. They put an end to the game and they get rewarded with a mouth full of fur or they mess up and get left out or on the biting end of a shock collar. When the experiance has progeressed to the point of doing the same things consistently then the competition becomes an entire different process. The competition of anything, has many, many varibles that are uncontrollable by the owner/handler and then you have the human factor that's seems to take over when people enter into competition. I've been in competition where the entire personality of an individual changes as soon as the cast is drawn out and a friend then becomes an enemy. I always went with the idea that if my dog was good enough it would win BUT that isn't even close as the variable got in the way of the best dog winning. Same thing in bench shows where the participants are at the mercy of an individual judges personal taste. It is very hard and time consuming to put a title on a dog as there are so many of these varibles to overcome and even a very good or even a great dog will have trouble doing it very easily. One other varible that I fogot to mention is luck because if you are lucky to get in a cast with all the varibles in line and you have that well bred and honed dog you MAY be able to place if the human aspect don't get in the way.
So to answer your question I would say it would be easier to breed a dog with the genetics to become a champion BUT harder to get that title on that particular dog.

I have to disagree that True FIELD CHAMPION CALIBER hounds are born!!! They are made 100%,, you think Jordan, Bryant, James, and i could keep going but you think they became champions by just being born?????? I think not!!! I dont understand why some think that champions are born, there may be some born with more talent but that doesnt nake them champions by anymeans!!
I have said it more than 1 and will say it again!!! FC'S ARE MADE NOT BORN
Da talent and genetics has ta be in da hound but den its up ta u ta get da most out of da hound. So I beleive champions are made not born!! Same as snowhounds der made by da owner not.born boys!! So run ur hounds hard and put many hrs on dem and of course start wid gud breeding!!
JMO.
It all starts with knowing what you are looking at, when you are watching hounds run....It may be easier when you breed your own and have a couple of generations to compare, and more prospects than most but you still have to run and evaluate hounds hard. You have to be honest with yourself and get the hounds to as many trials as possible.

Gotta friend that has a saying I believe to be very true. BAOTB! Bad ass out the box! Box=womb. If FC's could be made, every dog in my back yard would have fcgd in front of their name.

johns, how about if Bryant, Jordan, and James were all born of genetics that only allowed them to be 5' tall. i guess they would have been just as good with the proper training! It's genetics .

Hey Neil bring me 1 of those FC'S coming out of the womb and i will let you tell me how long to wait to take it to a field trial with no training and if it makes a FC. i will give you $5,000 for it after it has finished if it dont finish then you give me $5,000 safe bet for a FC OUT OF THE WOMB RIGHT???
So what your saying is screw the training they are born a FC??? THAT IS COMPLETE BULLSH#T!!! I understand the tools have to be there but i dont care who you are you cant take a dog with no training and become a FC if you could why is it so hard to have one?? You cant just have one, You put work into your hounds they dont come out champs!! You have to make them!!! NO ONE IN THE WORLD WOULD BE A CHAMP IF THEY DIDNT PUT THE WORK IN AND MAKE THEMSELVES CHAMPS!! PERIOD POINT BLANK!!
I believe what he is saying is this...
you can take 2 hounds out of the same litter and 1 finishes (whatever reg). Both hounds have had exactly the same training, conditioning and opportunity to become champion, only one was born exceptional and the other was not. That makes me figure that Champions are born and not made. You cannot train into a hound all the traits takes to be a champ. They are either born with it or they are not. That said, a guy could take a mediocre hound, hide his non hunting azz from the judges, make sure to run under the same guy(s) that might like him and stay local to eventually get the 3 wins and points needed.
