Hard hunt/grit beagle line

I know this questions always comes up, so here it is again, please no bashing others.

Im looking for young , small female or bloodline that has grit,hunt,med plus. Pure rabbit dog to hunt in the thick,nasty briars day in day out. My older dog, is skirting the thick stuff latley, and will need another dog or pup to replace her. I live in nj, hunt only, not a trial guy, just need a good old fashison gun dog. I was refered to weirweek line, but I hear too slow. Need help

This has been beaten over the head. Do yourself a favor Go to some of the spo trials here in PA and NY and go watch some dogs run. Watch them run and make up your mind first hand. What is grit and hard hunt for some on here may not be enough for what you want. Everyone has his own opinion. the only way to really know what you want is when you see the actual line of dogs run. Now if you don't have time to go watch some run then you can't have enough time to run and keep dogs in shape.....DH

Same with your cliche answer, I know I'm not going to trials all over the state(s) look for a particular line of dogs! This is the great thing about this beagle board community of knowledge!

I too hear weircreek are some true grit, type of dogs but are med speed dogs.

gfedor, Don't take this wrong, but how much weight would you say is the least amount that you would call " Heavy" . No catch here , just wondering.

I'm just saying!! You don't have too travel all over the state. If you go to any given trial here in PA or NY within a few hours you will see Flatcreek, Rangerdan, Kalagha bred hounds run and so on. The biggest mistake I have made in beagling is listening to people tell me what they thought were the hounds I would like. I had a person run one of my hounds a few years back, This person has been around beagling for many years. He called me a few days later and told me he couldn't believe the amount of hunt my dog had. He went on to say she had great hunt and so on.....That dog had just average or maybe below average hunt to me. I just kept my mouth shut. Same thing with styles, I had someone again well known tell me there male had great control and close check work. I wanted to breed to the male, When I went to see the male run he was all over the place and was no where near the check or loss. Hunt, speed, grit, check work is all up to a person viewing the dogs opinion. Dillinger, if your going to use people on this message board that you do not know to help you decide what blood line you are going to run then good luck to you........DH

Take your time and research. I will stick with what deerhost has said wholeheartedly, GO SEE in person, not hearsay. Lots of variables, speed ranges, hunt, mouth, nose. Go see in person and then you don't have to take as many chances. If you watch a dog run and see dogs off that dog, or dogs, you can predict what they are pretty reasonably.

Been there and done that on hearsay and I spent way less on gas for travel going to see the ones that helped me find the ones I liked. Invest the time and get what you want!!!

Andre , i agree with what your are saying about seeing in person.As we all have different views.

Gene if had to pick a few bloodlines with extreme hunt ,in my experiences patch dogs have alot hunt but.are rougher on the line
I am really impressed with blackjack and blackcreek bloodlines so far,as i have alot in my kennel.

I have a 2 yr old small female i am selling if you dont find anything else let me know

i beleave i was told Dingus has hunt and . northways stuff . which would bring in alot of diffrent kennel lines.
like DH told you ,which is very , very good advice.
stay on here long enough and you will see what he means.

line controle for a little pack dog and line contole for a gundog format are not even close to being to same.
just like the patch blood and the Blackcreek / inline blackjack blood that was mentioned.
thats like compairing a turbo charged corvette to a volkswagon .

weircreek and black creek i beleave both come from yellow creek.
take your best to run with someone ,so you have a measuering stick.
DH has some nice hounds. if my memory serves me right he use to put clips up.

Thanks for feed back. I know the saying ' you get what you put into it'. I wish I had more time to run. Work some crazy hours(usally 60hr a week,maybe more) father of three kids, etc. Ive been blessed with good dogs so far, just looking to narrow down the search for next dog.
I usally get to run/hunt 2 times a week (3 hrs pleasure run sunday, and all day weekday hunt) also try to get dogs run/walk in am before work ,around 3 mile jog.

I had kalagha dog before ,she was great, grit med plus speed,awesome kennel manners. I tried calling several breeders of that line ,but no results (les,gary slick). I have a pup, from dan lang ,she id little over 6 months, so far so good,has potential. She is flatcreek/mr bill.

Anyway, just trying to narrow my search down. Ill try to get to some trials this spring.

If I had it to do over again knowing what I know now.I would find the hardest hunting grittiest hounds I could.A line that consistantly reproduced them.Also with good control not ones that stayed broke down as much as they ran.Speed is the last thing on my list anymore.It can be added very easy in a generation or two.But as I've found out it is much harder to take it out if you want to slow them down a step or two.With consistant results.
