Re: Speed Running
At 8-10 your probably not walking anymore. I have one that on a good scenting day will be around 5-7 mph on the gps. I can't walk that fast anymore

Re: Speed Running
0 or 1 traditional brace more like 0.To me a 10 would be big 15 + in.males on hare in the open woods.Hard to apply that kind of foot to a dog running a cottontail.Fox hounds or deer hounds would be the closest thing I can think of in the south with that kind of foot.

Re: Speed Running
Everybody's speed scale 1-10 varies. I had a guy tell me his dog ran bout a 7+ on speed, and when we ran it, it was more like a 5 according to my speed scale. Ive seen dogs come to our are where we have a lot of reclaimed mine ground that were what I call fast dogs but couldn't run as fast due to the terrain, cause they were not use to it. I like a hound to run as fast as it can, correctly, given the terrain it has to run. I do not expect one of my hounds that run a 7+ go to Canada and fly on a rabbit. If they tried they look like a idiot. If you run a certain format, everybody will be close to the same. If you just run gun dogs everybody's will be pretty close. But its kinda like everthing else, To each his or her owns.
My Scale
1-4- slow dogs
5-6- medium
7-10 - fast

Re: Speed Running
A few of mine were going 26 mph on a site chase. So that's kinda fast.

Re: Speed Running
I try to avoid the numbers . i would consider my dogs a med fast beouse if you take them out by themselves they run what i consider a six or seven and if you throw them in with a few more dogs they might go up to an eight or nine. most dogs have gears and the ones i like will only run as fast as their nose and brains will allow. i consider a dog at a fast jog 5 . if they are walking 4, running slow a 7, pouring the coal a 9

The AVERAGE Cottontail Rabbit can reach 25-27 MPH the NEAT thing about that is they have NO ACCELARATION the 1st step is top speed !!
I saw this a few years back and it is just another way of judging speed:
4. Approx. 100yrds behind the rabbit after it has crossed
5. Approx. 80yrds behind the rabbit after it has crossed
It is at this point in our scale when time becomes involved as well!
6. Approx. 60-80 yrds and approx 2-3 mins behind the rabbit after it has crossed
7. Approx. 50-70 yrds and approx.1-2 mins behind the rabbit after it has crossed
8. Approx. 40-60 yrds and approx 1-2 mins behind the rabbit after it has crossed
9. Approx. 20-40 yrds and approx 0-1 mins behind the rabbit after it has crossed (high 9 would be a dog that has on occasion caught a rabbit or two as well!)
10. This is the speed that we reserve for dogs that can and will catch a rabbit on a consistent basis
